Michaela Kargbo, Esq has been appointed by the Young African Women Congress (YAWC) Network Council, as President of the YAWC Network, Sierra Leone Chapter. She takes over from Naimeh N.J. Ishmail who has been in office since 2019.
Michaela Ya-Alimamy Kargbo is a recently called Barrister and Solicitor of the Superior Court of Sierra Leone. She is passionate about women, children and girls. For this, she has been involved in many advocacy and volunteering activities since secondary school. With extensive experience in advocacy and a Degree in Law, she has the proven ability and organizational skills to work with women, children and other marginalized sets of people to ensure equality in society. After graduation from university, she volunteered for Justice and Peace Commission Caritas Makeni, a human rights Catholic organization rendering free legal services to detainees at correctional centres and suspects under police custody, giving welfare support, family tracing and post-prison support. Her key responsibilities were conducting base-line surveys in the correctional centres, going in search of and selecting cases from the police stations and correctional centres, serving as a link between these offices and the organization, monitoring court cases, doing family tracing and providing monthly reports to the organization on activities embarked on and progresses made. Between May 2013 and March 2015, she volunteered as an English Newsreader, Continuity Announcer and Reporter at the Port Loko District Children’s Advocacy Radio. She has also been an intern at the Legal Department of Rokel Commercial Bank Sierra in Freetown. Other achievements to her credit include Youth Advisory Panel member and Youth Champion for the National Secretariat for the Reduction of Teenage Pregnancy and Early Marriage, under the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, former Vice President of the Young African Women Congress (YAWC) Network, Sierra Leone Chapter from 2019 to 2022, Best delegate, Justice and Peace Council in the African Youth Assembly held in Freetown 2019 and Youth Advisory Panel member for Plan International Sierra Leone(2014-2018).
Ms Kargbo is a Commonwealth Scholar. She has an LLM is Law and Globalisation from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom; Bachelor of Laws Degree and Diploma in Law from Makeni University, Sierra Leone
She is expected to lead the reorganisation of the West African Country’s chapter of the YAWC Network.
In a similar manner, Laura Kadie Sesay has been appointed as the vice President of the Sierra Leone Chapter of the YAWC Network. She is expected to work in a leading role to support the President in carrying out her duties.
Laura Kadie Sesay is a well-grounded finance expert with a huge administrative experience when it comes efficient financial management. She works at the Account session at the University of Makeni, in Sierra Leone. She is an exceptional communicator in terms of passing on brilliant ideas to colleagues that are pertinent to organizational growth and success. She holds a first-class Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance, currently pursuing an MBA-Finance at the University of Makeni. Laura is energetic, with a strong background in finance, Economics, Business Administration Management, and social Entrepreneurship. She is knowledgeable in business development guide. Because of the developmentally oriented personality of Laura, she usually loves competitive environment that effectively utilizes her analytical, leadership and organizational skills to conceive and achieve solutions. She is an expert in conflict management and this gives her the ability to deal with matters that are highly sensitive and complex in nature. Laura Kadie Sesay was employed as a finance officer in 2019 at the University of Makeni after graduation because of her outstanding academic excellence she demonstrated during her university days. She worked with SMAVE International; as Intern and volunteer in the Finance Department and the Ebola response team in partnership with World Food Programme (WFP).
As a Volunteer under Ebola response, she was charged with the responsibility of heading the supply and registration team and representative for Caritas and WFP working with Africa Union (A.U) expert. Moreover, on the inter personal skills and competence, she is dedicated and commands a high level of hardworking disposition, deep sense of professional belief and high level of integrity backed by the willingness to work under pressure and also comfortable working with team. On her social skills and competence, she has the ability to lead others base on respect and mutual consent; she has the ability to respect other person’s opinion based on his or her own perspective especially when working with people from different cultural background.
