In a bid to celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th of March 2023, the Young African Women Congress (YAWC) Network, Nigeria Chapter organised a free skill acquisition training for women tagged “A SKILLFUL WOMAN IS AN EMPOWERED WOMAN” at Awoyaya in Lagos State.
The training started at 12:00noon anchored by Mrs. Mary Adebote, the Media Liaison Officer YAWC Nigeria Chapter with an opening prayer and a short introductory speech by the President of the YAWC Network Nigeria Chapter in the person of Mrs. Emmanuel Eunice. She welcomed all the participants and shared the vision and mission of the YAWC Network and its past achievements. Immediately after her speech, the training began and it was led by a creative person known for her skillfulness in the industry. She trained the participants on “autogele”, stoning and bag making. Autogele is an African headwear readily made for easy use. She made the training educative, fun and exciting for the participants. During the training, she involved all the participants through her conservation and ensured they also try things out on their own. She also signed them up for mentorship to monitor their performance and interest.
A total of 20 young women were present for the training. After the training, the participants were inaugurated into the Young Africa Women Congress Network and the Lagos sub-Chapter was launched and its president and vice president appointed. The participants were excited to be part of the Network. Amongst the participants were young women in engineering, agriculture and law.
The Young African Women Congress (YAWC) Network is a fraternity of young women of African descent living in Africa and the diaspora who seek to be empowered and be themselves, changemakers for leadership and development on the continent. Membership of the Network is segmented by Chapters based on country demarcations. However, there is a common goal which involves grassroots mobilisation of women for leadership and development through advocacy, training and projects. The Headquarters of the Network is in Accra- Ghana. There are currently eight operational Chapters on the Africa continent namely, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya with the Gambian Chapter at its budding stage. There are two other diaspora chapters which are in their budding stages, specifically in the United Kingdom and the Scandinavian region.
