IMPACT MADE SO FAR

Short Intro Text

The YAWC Network has successfully held a continental campaign against rape and defilement where perpetrators were brought to book and counselling and rehabilitation sessions were provided for victims during Covid time in 2020. The Ghana Chapter followed up seventeen cases while the other chapters followed up a minimum of two cases each. Beyond bringing perpetrators to book, the social media campaign reached over 50 million people across the African continent. This was a unified campaign led by the Global Secretariat of the Network and it was partnered by STAR Ghana, IGRED Africa and Economic Fighters League.
YAWC Network has been an advocate against Female Genital Mutilation. In February, 2024, the network embarked on a 20-day unified campaign within its National Chapters across the African continent to strongly denounce this global plague which continues to undermine the rights of young girls and women in Africa thereby constituting a stumbling block to the advancement of gender equality and achievement of the full potentials of young girls and women. Bearing in mind the reach and proficiency of social media, the campaign kicked off with a position statement from the Network. It was essential to convey the Network’s stance on FGM and rally all stakeholders to its agenda of bringing the practice to an end or barest minimal. This was followed by the production and circulation of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials. The IEC materials which were generated by members across the continent and carried sensitization, precautionary and alternative contents on FGM were circulated on all official YAWC Network social media platforms and members’ personal social media platforms. The social media advocacy spanned from the 1st to the 20th day of the campaign. On day 15 of the campaign, all YAWC Network platforms went blue as members from across the continent took turns to post protest photographs of themselves in their #stopFGM branded T-shirts on all official YAWC and members’ personal social media platforms. The idea was to use these images as visual agents of the campaign. To further push the agenda and make it more interactive with the public, the network embarked on a series of media engagements. These took the form of radio and television appearances on 11 network stations across 6 Regions in Ghana, and 1 media house in Nigeria. The media engagements created an avenue for opening up the discussion among members. The campaign climaxed with a stakeholder webinar that empaneled experts including men who discussed the menace from different perspectives. Participants of the webinar had the opportunity to ask questions and made meaningful contributions to the conversation. Over 20,000 people shared the campaign fliers on their social media platforms. Social media and the traditional media advocacy jointly reached over 20 million people across the African Continent.
Since 2016, over 8 thousand young women have been empowered directly through the annual convocations. Due to the grassroot empowerment chain approach used by the network, where participants of the convocation are expected to empower women in their communities through community-based projects, over 300 hundred thousand women have been empowered at the grassroot level across Africa.
All Chapters have held a series of outreach programmes in prisons, orphanages, deprived communities, Senior High Schools, conflict prone communities, etc. The activities that were carried out includes health screening exercise, donations, counseling, mentorship, rehabilitation exercises, sensitization, et cetera. Over 15 thousand people have benefitted from our outreach programmes across Africa.
The Network has successfully run Masterclass sessions for its members that have built their capacities in their various fields of endeavor.
Some of the members have been rescued from ailing situations including depression, abusive relationships and financial difficulties through the counseling programmes that are run for them.
Due to the persistent motivation by the Network, many of our members have progressed higher in their career and education. We have some of our members elected and appointed to top political positions in their countries, promoted to higher ranks in their career and others attaining higher education qualification including professional certification like Law, Engineering, et cetera and PhDs.
