The Young African Women Congress Council Chair who doubles as the Executive Director for the ExLA Group, Daniel Osei Tuffuor together with the YAWC team in Kenya paid a courtesy call on the Chief Administrative Secretary (Deputy Minister) of Public Services and Gender at the State Department of Gender in Nairobi, Kenya.
After briefing her on the preparations towards the upcoming Young African Women Congress (YAWC) 2022 East Africa sub-regional session to be held at the Kenya School of Government, Lower Kabete, Nairobi from 22nd to 25th May, 2022, she congratulated the team for the great work we are doing on the African continent.
She highlighted the fact that the various governments and the regional blocs in Africa have all the beautiful policies to promote the gender agenda and also to curtail social vices against women. The problem however is that we do not have enough institutions and organisations to put a foot to them to ensure their implementation. And with this, governments are sometime found wanting. She further added that if a group like YAWC has taken up such a mantle, the least anyone can do is to give them their maximum support both in cash and kind.
She did not hesitate to emphasize the measures her Ministry and the Kenya government have put in place to reduce domestic violence in the country to the barest minimum. She informed us that there is a rescue centre for victims of domestic violence in the country in partnership with the telecommunication companies. There is also a ‘policare’ where police and nurses have been put at those centres so that victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse can run to for justice and medical attention without having them to go through the stress of going to a police station and then being referred to the hospital for medical report at their own cost and sometimes the police are disinterested in such cases. She added that her Ministry is working so hard with donor partners to procure ambulances for those centres so that instead of victims going to the centres after the abuse, they just call them from wherever they are and then they will come for them.
Honourable Minister will speak at the Congress.
