REGISTRATION GUIDELINES/REQUIREMENTS

The Young African Women Congress Annual Global Convocation (YAWC-AGC) is an annual pan-African event organized by the Young African Women Congress (YAWC) Network to promote the empowerment of women through skills for Africa’s sustainable development. The congress is open to young African women both on the continent and the diaspora, aspiring for leadership and change at various levels, who demonstrate some level of commitment and enthusiasm in championing the agenda for women’s empowerment on the African continent.

Eligibility

  • Women of African descent from Africa and the diaspora. Non-African women who have lived and worked on women empowerment issues in Africa are equally eligible. 
  • English/French language proficiency 
  • Desire to positively impact Africa  
  • Commitment to serve the development agenda for women on the African continent 
  • Register online and pay the registration fee.

Deadline for registration is 30th September but we may close registration anytime we exceed our expected number of delegates.

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

We recommend that you read carefully the following instructions to help you complete your registration process accurately and successfully.

GENERAL REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS AND TIPS

  • Registering to participate in YAWC 2024 Annual Global Convocation is via an online application system. You will need a computer/phone and access to the internet to register. Only applicants who fully complete the online registration process will be accepted to participate in the congress.
  • You do not have to finish your registration in one session. You may save your work and return later to continue working on your registration as many times as necessary until completion. Please note the deadlines stipulated for the registration.
  • Answer all questions on the registration form in English/French.
  • Questions that require response are marked with an asterisk (*). Questions that are not marked with an asterisk are OPTIONAL.

STEP 1: PERSONAL DETAILS AND CONTACT INFORMATION

  1. Please provide your First Name as it appears on your birth certificate, passport or national identification card.
  2. Provide your Surname or Family name as it appears on your birth certificate, passport or national identification card.
  3. Provide any other given name(s).
  4. Please provide an email address which you check regularly as this will be the primary mode of contacting you.
  5. Please fill in your primary phone number. It will be a major means through which the team will contact you.
  6. Provide an alternative phone number (if you have one) where we can reach you in case we cannot reach you on your primary phone number. This could be a parent, spouse, other family member, or work phone number.
  7. If you use WhatsApp, please check yes and indicate the phone number to which your account is associated. This is optional.
  8. If you have a Facebook and/or Twitter account, please check yes and indicate your handles. Note that this is optional.
  9. Please fill in your Postal Address (P.O. Box number), if you have one.
  10. Please provide your Date of Birth by selecting the year, month, and day on the pop-up calendar or using the format (YYYY-MM-DD).

  13. Please note that, all applicants non-resident in Nigeria are required to have a passport in order to travel to Nigeria. You will be required to fill in the number, country of issue, and date of expiration of your passport.
  14. Nigerian applicants resident in Uganda will be required to fill in the ID number or Passport number and date of Issue of their ID Cards or Passport. Non-Nigerian Applicants resident in Nigerian will be required to do same with their passports.

STEP 2: EDUCATION AND LANGUAGES

Education

Please tell us about your educational background. Indicate your highest level of education completed, and your Course of Study, Name of Institution, Year of Completion. Please also indicate if you are currently enrolled in school/college/university. While the YAWC programme values a person’s education, there is no minimum level of education or minimum grade required for participation in the programme.

Languages

English/French language proficiency is required for participation in the YAWC 2024 Annual Global Convocation. All activities will be conducted in English, including Keynote Addresses, Plenary Sessions, Presentation Sessions, Discussions, Meetings, Cultural Activities, and Social Interactions. Please fill in how you will evaluate your English language skills (Basic, Intermediate or Advanced) as accurately as possible and tell us what other international languages you comprehend.

For delegates who are proficient in French, there would be a French translation for all the sessions at the congress.

STEP 3: WORK EXPERIENCE

Please tell us about your current or most recent work. This may include formal or informal employment, self-employment, or other forms of engagement with organisations. It is not mandatory that you are or have ever been employed, but we want to know as much about you as possible.

STEP 4: GROUP DISCUSSION SESSION SELECTION

Group Classification

There are fifteen (15) discussion groups to choose from: Women in Corporate Governance; Women in Politics; Women in Business; Women in Agriculture; Women in Sexual and Reproductive Health Advocacy; Higher Education for the Girl Child/STEM; Women in Digital Technology; Women in Climate Change; Women against outmoded Cultural Practices like FGM; Women against Gender-based Violence; Women in Conflict Management, Peace & Consensus building; Women in Creative Arts; Women in Real Estate; Women in Media and Women in Academia. Participants can participate only in one of the groups. Read the descriptions of each group carefully before making your selection. It must however be noted that, the selection panel may choose to re-assign a participant to a group other than the group she selected if they deem necessary.

NB: Discussions would be behind closed doors and the ‘Chatham rule’ will be adhered to.

STEP 5: SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS

 This information is used to better understand delegates in order to make provisions for special needs. The aggregate information collected through this form will be kept private and confidential.

  1. Marital Status– Please indicate your marital status i.e. whether you are married or single or divorced. The YAWC Network does not discriminate on the basis of marital status.
  2. Religious Affiliation–Please indicate your religious affiliation, if any. You may choose from one of the major religions in the world on the list, or write in any other religion that you adhere to. YAWC Network does not discriminate on the basis of religious affiliation or any other affiliations.

STEP 6: SUBMIT

This is the final step of your registration. Before you can submit, you must read and accept the following two statements:

In order to participate in the Young African Women Congress Annual Global Convocation, I understand that I must meet the minimum eligibility requirements for admission to the programme, that I must pay the required registration fees, that I must meet the qualifications standards for the specific group that I have chosen, that I must be a young woman of African descent living in Africa or the diaspora or non-African women working in Africa or interested in the development of Africa , and that my admission to the programme is subject to the determination by the organisers. I have read, understood, and will comply with the terms and conditions of the congress. I hereby certify that I have completed this registration fully and accurately to the best of my knowledge. I understand that any falsification, omission, or concealment of material fact may subject me to being prevented from participating in the congress.
